Mortal Kombat Project is a free homage to the original Mortal Kombat arcade and console game.

Mortal Kombat changed the world of fighting games upon it's release in 1992. It took captured images from real life actors, combined them with skillful button play, added a whole lot of gore and a dynasty was born. Since then the series has continued to release titles with more fighters, more arenas and more gore. Most recently it's outings on current generation machines has involved high fidelity action and bone shattering finishing moves.

The arcade was where it all began though. With a small roster of characters and a limited number of battlegrounds, Mortal Kombat did a lot with a little. the original game introduced us to such fan favourites as Scorpion, Sub Zero and Liu Kang. It showed a generation of teens just how messy things could get with it's absurd fatalities and it gave people a gloriously gruesome way to settle their arguments.

Mortal Kombat Project looks to bring the arcade classic back to you on your home PC. All of the originals gore and glory is lovingly restored and the action is as good as ever. The controls can be a little bit awkward but with a bit of persistence you should pick it up no problem. The graphics also don't hold up too well but that's to be expected of a game that's over twenty years old. In our humble opinion the vintage graphics of the original make up part of it's charm and even if they look laughable compared to the glitz and glamor of modern day triple A releases, it's a part of the experience and we wouldn't change a thing.

As a free download with all the excitement of the original we heartily recommend this download. Even with the aged graphics it's a great way to work out some of your frustrations.

Pros

  • Visceral Action
  • Tons of Nostalgia Value
  • Great Stress Reliever

Cons

  • Dated Graphically
  • Awkward Control System
